Let’s look at the similarities and differences between deck mounted and curb mounted skylights.
What Are Deck Mounted Skylights?
Deck mounted skylights are a recent design aimed to lower the profile of the unit while increasing its energy efficiency, at the same time. Energy efficiency is ultimately increased by the skylight ‘hugging’ the roof.
With this design, the curb is, in fact, the skylight. Higher quality manufacturers have perfected these designs to fit various sizes and roofing types.
The lower profile will provide an improved visual appeal along with the energy efficiency. These skylights are good choices for new construction projects or to replace existing skylights.
What Are Curb Mounted Skylights?
This is the most popular skylight type offered today. This skylight requires a box structure for the unit to be placed on. This typically consists of a small box and construction lumber set on edge while attached to a roof.
The box will then be ‘flashed in’ with the existing roof material for waterproofing. This skylight is designed to sit over the curb, similar to a lid on a shoe box.
One of the biggest benefits of this skylight type is the ease to manufacture custom sizes. The only downside is this version of skylight is less energy efficient than deck-mounted types.
Deck Mounted Vs Curb Mounted Skylight Differences
Overall, deck mounted skylights offer better energy efficiency and durability. However, this type is much harder to install.
Curb mounted skylights are easier to install, but won’t last as long, in most cases. The choice between the two types heavily depends on the homeowner’s preferences and budget.
