Tile roofs are found throughout Chandler and the Phoenix Valley. They handle the Arizona climate well and give homes a distinctive Southwestern appearance. However, homeowners sometimes worry that having a tile roof rules out installing a tubular skylight.
Fortunately, tubular skylights can be installed on many clay and concrete tile roofs. The important part is using equipment intended for the roof type and having the work completed by someone who understands tile roofing.
Tile Requires a Different Installation Approach
Installing a tubular skylight on a tile roof is not the same as working with ordinary asphalt shingles. Roof tiles form part of the system that directs rainwater away from the home. They must be removed and replaced carefully around the new roof opening.
A professional installer begins by examining the type, shape, and condition of the existing tile. Flat concrete tiles may require a different approach from curved clay tiles. The flashing and protective skirt around the skylight must work with that particular roof profile.
This is not a job that should depend on a large amount of caulk. Proper flashing allows water to travel naturally around the opening and continue down the roof.
What Happens to the Existing Tiles?
Only the tiles around the proposed opening normally need to be disturbed. They are carefully lifted so the installer can reach the roof surface and underlayment below. After the tubular skylight and flashing are fitted, the surrounding tiles are reset around the installation.
Older tiles can sometimes become brittle after years of Arizona sun exposure. A tile may also have an existing crack that was difficult to see from the ground. The installer should check the immediate work area before cutting into the roof.
If replacement tiles might be needed, it is helpful to determine whether matching tiles are available before installation begins.
Finding the Right Route for the Tube
Choosing the ceiling location is only one part of planning a tubular skylight. The installer must also consider where the opening will emerge through the roof.
Trusses, rafters, wiring, ductwork, and other equipment may sit between the ceiling and roof. An adjustable tube can be routed around some obstacles, although a shorter and more direct route will generally deliver better daylight.
This inspection can also reveal whether the first location the homeowner chose is practical. Moving the ceiling diffuser a short distance may create a much cleaner route through the attic without making a noticeable difference inside the room.
What About Arizona Monsoon Rain?
July brings increasing humidity and the possibility of strong monsoon storms. Any roof penetration must be prepared to handle wind driven rain as well as water flowing down the roof.
A tile compatible flashing system helps protect the opening without interfering with the way the rest of the roof sheds water. Correct installation is especially important when the roof has curved tiles, an unusual profile, or aging underlayment.
Homeowners should also remember that a tubular skylight cannot repair unrelated roof problems. Slipped tiles, damaged underlayment, or an existing leak may need attention before the skylight is installed.
